Fioretti is challenging Ald. Madeline Haithcock in the April 17 runoff election.
E-mail this story

NOW's move comes three days after a Chicago Tribune story showed that Fioretti's explanation of his relationship with the woman conflicted with the public record.

Fioretti has said that the woman began harassing him after she saw him at work in courtrooms. Fioretti is a lawyer, and the woman is a court reporter.

But the Tribune story highlighted a court document that Fioretti filed seeking to have the protection order lifted. The document stated that he and the woman had had a past "dating relationship."

His campaign later said Fioretti and the woman were friends who saw each other at social events over the years but declined to comment further, other than to say the court documents "speak for themselves." Fioretti's campaign did not have an immediate comment this morning.

In NOW's statement, the group said it had relied on information provided by Fioretti in making its endorsement. Prior to the Tribune story, the group was not aware of the document noting the "dating relationship" between the two.

"Chicago NOW originally endorsed Mr. Fioretti based on the information he provided to us, but we now have discovered that he misled Chicago NOW regarding his relationship to the woman who filed the emergency order of protection," Przekop said in the statement. "Mr. Fioretti has been less than forthcoming and after days of inquiries to his campaign we still do not know why."

NOW originally endorsed Fioretti but pulled its endorsement just days before the February municipal election after learning of the order of protection that was obtained against Fioretti in August 2003.

Fioretti finished first in the six-candidate field with 28 percent of the vote, followed by Haithcock with 21 percent. Because neither won a majority, they will meet again in the runoff.

Shortly after the Feb. 27 election, Chicago NOW re-endorsed Fioretti, noting that a judge vacated the protection order and saying the allegations had no basis in fact. The group acknowledged that it had not interviewed the woman.

In the statement released Monday, Chicago NOW said it would endorse neither candidate in the 2nd Ward race.

"We want to use this unfortunate situation as an opportunity to encourage true women's advocates to run for office in Chicago," Przekop said. "After this bleak episode, we are more committed than ever to recruiting woman-friendly candidates for the next election

Re: Haithcock getting desperate and playing dirty

I am ashamed at some of the people in the 2nd Ward. And unlike many people I am civically involved in this community. I have been volunteering for the Alderman for over a year and respect this strong woman very much. Although there may be some short comings in the office she has been getting the job done for almost 14 years, at least 10 years longer than most people can say they've lived in the ward. Especially the South Loop. There is one issue that Bob Fioretti continuously brings up, that I feel I must address. He would like you to believe that the Alderman pockets money from developers as additional annual salary. Do you know what this woman does with developer money? Allow me to enlighten you. As part of development contracts that are signed in the 2nd ward, a company is required to contribute an allotted amount of money to the 2nd Ward, not the Alderman, which is then dispersed for the purpose of community enrichment. And over the years it has been used for just that purpose. This money goes to neighborhood organizations that NEED it like the Boys and Girls Club, local libraries, she has bought computers for grammar schools, helped fund play lots, contributed to college scholarships awarded at high schools in the ward and the list goes on. This is what she does ANNUALLY. You also might not know that an Alderman isn’t given a budget to DO GOOD. They are given strict budgets to keep their offices functioning and Menu budgets for all the city service requests annually. If you don’t believe me go into the office at ask to see a copy. She is a busy woman and more than half of you say "Where is she?" She is getting the job done! Walk out of your condo or apartment and look around you! What do you see! I have lived in Chicago all my life, less than four years ago you couldn't catch me South of Congress and none of you probably knew South of Congress Parkway ever existed! It saddens me to see her attacked in such a way. Just remember when you go to the polls on April 17th you are voting based on a persons RECORD. Bob Fioretti has a decent record as a supposed civil rights attorney, but he hasn't even been active in the WARD he claims to want to be sooooo much a part of. Up until now the only neighborhood he has cared anything for is the PULLMAN DISTRICT, does that sound like the 2nd WARD to YOU............

P.S. If you look at key words in that message you would know that Fioretti gave someone a "best actor" award in a negative mail out and it wasn't directed at the Alderman. hmm.......

Re: Fioretti Restraining Order?

I am ashamed at some of the people in the 2nd Ward. However, I think a glut of high rises for density's sake isn't the answer. I don't think Prairie Avenue can handle the traffic or the parking issues that several hundred additional residents will bring. People are already constantly double-parked in front of Prairie Pointe. I suppose that problem could have been easily averted with the inclusion of a driveway, but apparently that wasn't a part of the plan. Oh well, at least they are preserving the lot on the northeast corner of 16th and Indiana for a public park.

The historic prairie district should evoke thoughts of the early 1900's when houses like the Glessner House lined the streets. There are at least two other houses on the 1900 South block of Prairie Avenue that are about 100 years old. The old Marshall Field Jr. house is one more block south (albeit, gutted, subdivided, and rehabbed). You can have your showpiece, just not here. I'm sure the X|O would be more at home further north with the likes of Lake Point Tower and the forthcoming Calatrava spire. Similar debate to prevent the "canyonization" of Printer's Row has long been ongoing.

It has nothing to do with ignorance. I was given all manner of assurances when I bought my property that I would continue to have an unimpeded northern view of the city. However, none of that really matters in Chicago. It doesn't matter how a neighborhood is zoned. A zoning variance is just a campaign donation away. Why do you think over half of Madeline Haithcock's campaign funds came from developers? This is why development is such a big issue in the upcoming municipal elections. Will there actually be affordable housing set aside at X|O? This is a building where there are $500k one bedroom condos. This is an example of what Rick Kogan referred to as "yuppifying" on Eight Forty-Eight this morning.

Re: Get out there and vote!

Sorry for the second post.

However, IIRC, towers were always proposed for the area around XO. If [new] residents don't spend any time researching the area and surrounding zoning then they have no reason to complain because of their ignorance.

Re: Get out there and vote!

How about those terrible townhomes on Prairie Ave? Or Chicago's version of Homer Glen aka Dearborn Park? Those projects did more harm to the community's aesthetic because of the lack of true planning and foresight, as well as the fact that they have terrible designs. At least XO provides something new as well as density. I'd rather have a showpiece in our skyline and facing Soldier Field and tourists than more bland brick 20-story buildings.

Re: Safari “Mail Contents of This Page” for Firefox?

I'm also looking for this functionality- if you find a solution please do let me know.
thanks very much
best
Tim Pasch

Re: The Wisdom of the O.C.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING what you been upto? William Petersen is so much better than David Caruso. I find Caruso incredibly annoying. It's little wonder why South Park makes so much fun of him.

The season premiere of CSI is on tonight. Hopefully my TiVo doesn't act up (which it has been known to do at times) and records it like it should.

Where's CSI: Chicago? Gary Sinise is from Chicago. Aren't there enough shows that are set in New York?
